                  On 14th of March the Rotract District 3220 organized a coastal area cleaning project collobrating with Green Map Sri Lanka on Crow Island Beach Park  from 6.30 a.m. onwards. I , as a member of Rotract club of SLIIT, participated with another 2 senior members for the event.                         In the morning they educated us by telling the importance of cleaning the ocean and coastal area. As it is a tedious task to clean the ocean and our main goal was to give the idea of cleaning sea side, we didn't clean the ocean. But there was a team with scuba kits which were hired by Green Map Sri Lanka. So, we started  cleaning coastal side at 8:00 a.m. We were given litter bags. There were 4 colours of litter bags.  They were ;

  1. Green (For collect biological wastage; such as syringes, cottons, gauzes and so on)
  2. Yellow (Paper items)
  3. Blue (Polythene materials)
  4. Black (Metal and glass items)

                     Everybody has to group in to two member groups. My partner was an Rotract Alumni member and his name was Anju. We volunteered to collect glasses and metal wastage. As it was a risky task we used a special gloves. Fortunately, I wore a pair of shoes, it got me covered by broken glasses.

                     In the end I and my partner collected 3 litter bags. Each of them were weighed  approximately 10 kilos. Actually, it was such a great experience. This event taught me a lesson; as citizens of Sri Lanka , all of us have a great responsibility to protect the  environment. This message only delivered to around 50 people on that day. But there are 20 million people in Sri Lanka. If everyone on that day has 4 family members in their family, 250 people got the idea which we are gonna spread. But it's not enough. So we are continuing these projects and our goal is to make the next generation aware about the importance of keep the environment clean.
